From Break-ins to Win-wins

 

The birth of the Craters of the Moon charitable trust was a result of the 1987 Bola Cyclone.

 

The devastation from that storm provided a literal windfall to the Wairakei Park area that was to lead to a change to the entrance of the Craters of the Moon thermal area from off State Highway One.

 

A formed and sealed access road plus two large sealed car parks and toilets some two kilometers off the main road were to become the catalyst for an amazing journey and a series of ongoing “wins”

 

The Bola Cyclone resulted in a large number of radiata pine trees being blown down.

The monies raised by the subsequent sale of timber meant that the Department of Conservation were required to spend the “windfall” back into the park.
